Two very different kinds of Smith end up on a chest rig, and they get there for opposite reasons.
The X-Frame — the gun that has nowhere else to go
The .500 S&W Magnum and the .460 XVR need a chest holster more than anything else I build. Four and a half pounds and better than a foot long is miserable on a belt. It drags one side of your trousers down, it swings when you walk, and the moment you shoulder a pack the whole thing is buried under the belt.
Up on your chest it sits square and stays clear of your gear. That doesn't make an X-Frame a light gun — nothing will — but it's the difference between carrying it and leaving it in the truck.
The working Smiths — 686, 629, Model 29, K-Frame
These are the other reason, and it isn't necessity. The stainless L-frame 686 in .357, the 629 and Model 29 in .44 Magnum and the classic K-Frame are among the most-carried revolvers ever made, and in the 4" to 6" range they sit right where a chest rig is genuinely comfortable rather than merely practical.
An X-Frame goes on your chest because it has to. A 686 goes up there because it's the nicest way to carry it.
How these are built
Wet-molded to your Smith from full-grain Wickett & Craig, lined with a second layer so the finish never marks. Retention is friction fit — the mold holds the revolver — with a hammer thong as secondary. Heavy bonded nylon thread, rich brown with white stitching.
